12 Tips to a Successful Yoga Practice

This initial checklist helped me start my yoga practice…

  • Always practice Hatha Yoga on an empty stomach: allow 3-4 hours after a meal or 1 hour after a snack.
  • Take a warm bath or a shower before and after Hatha Yoga practice, if you can.
  • Wear light, loose clothing, preferably made of natural fibers, that do not restrict your movements and you feel comfortable in.
  • Practice yoga barefoot.
  • Practice Hatha Yoga outdoors if possible; otherwise the room should be well ventilated.
  • Turn the phone off. This is YOUR time.
  •  Find the time which works best for you: some people find it easy to practice yoga in the morning, others prefer evenings.
  • Create a habit: practicing yoga at the same time every day.
  • Practice yoga with patience.
  • In the morning or during cold weather, your muscles will be stiffer, so carefully ease into postures at first.
  • Perform all of the postures (asanas) slowly and with control, concentrating on your breathing and relaxing into the position.
  • Get a special yoga mat for yourself. This is really important not because it makes your practice easier and safer, but because this is your sacred space or temple. Don’t let anyone step on your yoga mat because you will eventually build up energy on your mat, which will support you. Your mat is your portable temple.
