      Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

What makes organic coconut oil so special?

cold pressed coconut oilThe process of making organic coconut oil starts with freshly harvested coconuts which are de-husked and grated. The meat of the coconut is dried to remove the water, and then it is cold pressed and filtered to remove any remaining pieces of fruit. Some coconut oil is extracted using high heat, chemicals, and even bleach. That’s why it is so important to buy organic coconut oil from a reliable supplier or a reputable store.

If you want the best quality oil, look for Organic Raw Cold Pressed Virgin coconut oil.  It is cold pressed from only fresh coconuts, which allows it to retain more nutrients, flavor and aromas of fresh coconut.

Differences: Expeller pressed coconut or centrifugal coconut oil are not cold pressed.

If you compare virgin coconut oil bought from various suppliers you will feel the difference in the quality, nutrition, taste and smell.

You can use Organic Virgin Coconut Oil in cooking – it stands up to relatively high heat and gives a distinctive flavor to salad dressings. You can bake with coconut oil and even use it as a moisturizer for dry skin.  It’s true! And it is fun to watch coconut oil fluctuate from a solid to a liquid state right in your hands. The temperature of the skin warms up coconut oil causing the transformation from solid form into liquid.

Where to buy Organic Raw Cold Pressed Virgin coconut oil

A couple places where I buy Organic Raw Cold Pressed Virgin coconut oil are Whole Foods and Traders Joe’s. I am sure healthy food and vitamin supply stores carry it as well. And there is always the internet.

I always buy 2 jars: one for cooking and one to use as moisturizer for the skin (for my beauty routine).

      Beet Salad with Walnuts

Vegetables are an essential part of any diet and there are endless ways of using them to add variety and interest to everyday meals. I think beets look very pretty at the farmers market. But, I often get a question of what do you do with them? I personally prefer cooked beets over raw. Cooking beets brings out the sweetness of the vegetable and adds a whole new dimension of taste.

Cage Free Vs. Free Range Eggs

I  buy only “Pasture Raised” eggs. Here is why.

      cage free chickens

Are you going to the trouble of  buying “Cage Free ” eggs, and paying more money for it, thinking it is better for the environment, chickens, and you? This is exactly what I used to do. And now I am posting this article to help all of us make better choices.

      CAGE FREE:

      cage free
      What does cage free mean?

The cage free label only means that the chickens were not raised in cages and were able to roam in a building, room or enclosed area with unlimited access to food and fresh water during their production cycle. However chickens can still be confined in very close quarters inside a building where they are standing in their own muck and can barely move. Chickens have little or no access to the outdoors.

      free range eggs label

What does the Free Range label mean?

According to USDA regulation, the term “free range” only means that the chickens were allowed access to the outside. Since there is no specification to the duration or quality of the outdoor exposure, it can be just a  small door in a giant warehouse leading to several feet of outside dirt space. As I said there is no specification to the outdoor space, it does not have to have green grass, herbs etc.

Since the door is typically small and warehouses are typically large, most of the chicken never find the door.

      vegetarian fed egg

I have recently noticed a new term appearing on egg cartons “vegetarian fed”  When I saw the label, I right away thought that the chickens were fed healthy vegetables and grains. But then again, chickens like to eat bugs and insects. After some research here is what I learned.  “Vegetarian Raised” chickens are raised on industrialized feed, probably GMO and are NEVER allowed outside. EVER!

The Lexicon of Sustainability: THE EGG VIDEO

Yes, THIS is the term to go for!

Due to the number of variables involved in pasture-raised agricultural systems, the USDA has not developed a definition for pasture-raised products. Although the “pasture-raised”  label does not have any current regulations, it is being used by sustainable farmers to indicate chickens raised in the pasture, outdoors. Pasture raised eggs are what we want when shopping for eggs.  Pasture raised eggs come from HAPPY CHICKENS!

      Bake your own cookies

While purchasing an already made gluten-free cookie sounds very convenient, it will most likely be processed and have more preservatives than if you made it yourself. Instead of store-bought cookies, bake your own. Choose a gluten free cookie mix at your health food store.

There is a large variety of gluten free flour mixes available nowadays. Here are some great gluten-free flour optionsBob’s Red Mill Gluten Free All Purpose Baking Flour, Organic Amaranth Flour,  Brown Rice FlourAlmond Flour, Organic Quinoa Flour, Tapioca Flour. You can always dress up your cookies to your taste preference or your kids taste preferences. Adding nuts, spices, fruit, chocolate, coconut or ginger will make gluten-free cookies not only delicious but more nutrient dense.  You can even make extra dough and freeze it for later.

You might be surprised to learn that some candies contain gluten. While licorice is G-free, a lot commercial licorice candies are not.

My all time favorite is Pamela’s Gluten-Free Baking and Pancake Mix.  You can find some other gluten free baking mixes at  your local Whole Woods store.  Try Pamela’s  gluten free Chocolate Brownie Mix, gluten free Chocolate Cake Mix, gluten free Chocolate Chunk Cookie Mix.

Mung beans combined with certain sharp and penetrating herbs help break down toxins and flush them out of our body.   According to science of  Ayurveda, green mung bean soup helps balance all 3 doshas.

12 Tips to a Successful Yoga Practice

This initial checklist helped me start my yoga practice…

      • Always practice Hatha Yoga on an empty stomach: allow 3-4 hours after a meal or 1 hour after a snack.
      • Take a warm bath or a shower before and after Hatha Yoga practice, if you can.
      • Wear light, loose clothing, preferably made of natural fibers, that do not restrict your movements and you feel comfortable in.
      • Practice yoga barefoot.
      • Practice Hatha Yoga outdoors if possible; otherwise the room should be well ventilated.
      • Turn the phone off. This is YOUR time.
      •  Find the time which works best for you: some people find it easy to practice yoga in the morning, others prefer evenings.
      • Create a habit: practicing yoga at the same time every day.
      • Practice yoga with patience.
      • In the morning or during cold weather, your muscles will be stiffer, so carefully ease into postures at first.
      • Perform all of the postures (asanas) slowly and with control, concentrating on your breathing and relaxing into the position.
      • Get a special yoga mat for yourself. This is really important not because it makes your practice easier and safer, but because this is your sacred space or temple. Don’t let anyone step on your yoga mat because you will eventually build up energy on your mat, which will support you. Your mat is your portable temple.
